From the onset, Söntés has been a proud supporter of local arts and artists. For your viewing pleasure, the Söntés Fall/Winter Gallery Exhibition (F/WGE) has transformed our walls into an art gallery, and all of the pieces are for sale. As always, when dining with us or simply enjoying a cocktail, feel free to move about the restaurant and enjoy the artwork.

Among the twelve regional artists chosen to showcase their work at Söntés this season, three are oil painters: Alyssa Hoerl, Julia Helen Rice, and Yumi Yokoyama. Let’s take a moment to get to know these oil painters through their art, their awards, and their own words:

Alyssa Hoerl
Hoerl II Dolce Far Niente
“My passion is using Dale Chihuly’s inspiration to study the effects of different compositions and lighting on glass, while experimenting and creating my own work that will elicit an emotional response.”

Of her numerous awards and accolades:

Hoerl has shown her oil paintings at the Rosalux Gallery in Minneapolis, and at her Senior Show at the University of Minnesota in 2010. She is one of select few artists whose work was chosen to appear at Söntés more than once.

Julia Helen Rice

04“My landscape paintings are about place and openness. I came upon the idea of making them after spending some years on the East Coast and missing the wide expanse of sky that is the Midwest landscape.”

Of her numerous awards and accolades:

Rice was a Program Participant in the 2012 Altered Esthetics Solo Exhibition in Minneapolis, and received an Honorable Mention in the 2010 ArtsWest 31, at the L.E. Phillips Memorial Public Library in Eau Claire, Wisconsin. In 2007, she received a Thesis Research Grant from the Department of Art and Visual Culture at Bates College in Lewiston, Maine. Rice spent her junior year abroad in Florence, studying Italian, art history, and printmaking, and she apprenticed painter Massimo Giannoni.  She has shown her work in Minnesota, Wisconsin, New York, and Maine. Rice is currently represented by Abode Gallery in Stockholm, Wisconsin.

Yumi Yokoyama

“[I am] particularly inspired by color, which is so powerful that it could depress us or give us energy. I especially like colors of glass reflected by light. ”

Of her numerous awards and accolades:

Yokoyama was chosen the Media Winner at the St. Paul Art Crawl Poster competition in 2006, 2009, and 2010. In 2008, she was selected for the Travelers Cultural Fine Art Giclee Reproduction Program, and in July through October 2011, her work was part of the Healing Art Show at Owatonna Hospital. Yokoyama also works with stained glass, inspired by Louis Comfort Tiffany’s stained glass at a small museum in her Japanese hometown. She has shown her work in the United States and in Japan.

The Söntés Fall/Winter Gallery Exhibition runs from September 2013 to mid-March 2014. Our house is your house, so please feel free to explore the different artwork from room to room.

After you get your Red Velvet Cake Hot Chocolate from us at SocialIce, head on over to Söntés to warm up by the fire and take in the local art!
